Easychem TOX Early Warning

The result of intensive research activity, EASYCHEM TOX Early Warning is an exclusive direct-reading analyser using robotic technology, which allows fully automatic measurements of acute toxicity using rehydrated cultures of luminous bacteria.

EASYCHEM TOX Early Warning is a discrete analyser equipped with a colour touchscreen monitor housed in an industrial cabinet, comprising a refrigerated compartment for bacteria, reagents, calibrators and control solutions. A rotating mechanical arm performs aspiration, transfer and dispensing of solutions into 80 cuvettes located in a rotating, thermostatted reaction plate, including a luminometric reading system and integrated with an automatic cuvette washing station.

Measurement of acute toxicity using luminescent bacteria

To allow extended use of rehydrated bacterial cultures for up to 10 days, proprietary marine bacteria have been selected, grown, stabilised, and freeze-dried in ready-to-use vials, in accordance with ISO 11348-3. This method ensures that, after automatic rehydration, the microorganisms retain a measurable bioluminescence signal and unchanged sensitivity to various reference substances, such as zinc sulphate and mercury chloride, in accordance with the aforementioned ISO or GB-T standard. The system is programmed to manage numerous bacterial vials sequentially in a fully automated manner, enabling a high frequency of automatic analysis over an extended period (approximately one month of autonomy for unattended operation).

Unattended acute toxicity monitoring

The timing and frequency of analysis, limits, and control parameters are user-programmable and automatically managed. Continuous measurement of blanks and samples at a predetermined frequency of 40 seconds allows for near real-time monitoring of the inhibition kinetics, providing information on the residual luminescence of the sample after just a couple of minutes from the start of the analysis, and therefore on the sample's contamination level. Following a toxicity alarm, the system automatically reacts by performing a sample replica and positive controls with onboard known solutions, in order to confirm the detected toxicity, significantly reducing the risk of detecting false positives.

Standard data interfaces

The Easychem TOX Early Warning multiparameter analyser, equipped with a colour graphic touchscreen display, provides data locally via RS-232 serial output with separate 4-20 mA analogue outputs, and remotely via a web server for data viewing and presentation, via FTP, email, and by sending data and/or alarms via SMS to authorised operators' mobile phones.

Advantages and benefits

  • Fully automated analysis of enhanced toxicity, in accordance with standard ISO 11348-3;
  • Long operating life; low maintenance, low operating cost;
  • Very low reagent consumption; no preparation time; low cost of consumables;
  • Simple operation; “plug & play” analysis, no particular specialisation is required of the operator.
